The Story of The Iron Price:

(Inspired by the work of George R.R. Martin, A Song of Ice and Fire.)  The Iron Price is a Valyrian steel dagger rumored by some to have belonged to The Grey King during the Age of Heroes.  The Greyjoys, who claim to be direct descendants of the Grey King have passed the blade from generation to generation and have gone so far as to claim that the Grey King used The Iron Price to slay Nagga.  It is more likely that after the dagger was forged during the Valyrian Freehold it fell into the hands of the Greyjoys sometime after the Doom of Valria, at which time a Greyjoy King had the kraken sigil added to the blade.

Actual Design and Construction:

The blade was forged by Windlass Steelcrafts using 1085 high carbon steel.  I altered the original shape of the blade and increased the slope of the bevels.  I hand etched my drawing of the Greyjoy’s Kraken sigil onto both sides of the blade. The guard is fashioned from mild steel in the shape of tentacles on the ends of which I etched the squid’s trademark suckers.  The handle is carved from African Blackwood and curves around the steel guard.  I fashioned the pommel from mild steel in the shape of the tip of a squid’s body, giving the hilt assembly (pommel, handle, and guard) a stylized look of a squid.   The pommel is threaded onto the tang completing the blade’s take-down design.

Specifications:

Blade length: 12 inches

Overall length: 17.75 inches

Hand grip length: 3.625 inches

Blade width at widest point: 1.625 inches

Guard width: 5.75 inches

Weight: 14.2 ounces

Balance point: 1.25 inches in front of the guard

Sheath Construction:

The sheath is a traditional dagger design (wet formed to the blade with hand stitching down the back spine) constructed of 4-5 oz premium veg tan leather.  The body of the sheath is, stained black.  The leather throat I tooled with the same image of a Kraken that I created for the sigil on the blade.  The chape and the throat are both stained light brown with black antiquing.
