The Story of Ambalier’s Wyrm:

West of the realm of the woodland elves, deep within the mountains of Illantul lived a fearsome dragon.  Throughout the age of the winds the monster rained down fire and death upon the elves whenever they ventured beyond the boundaries of their enchanted forest.  Many elven warriors ventured to the dragon’s lair as they sought to rid Illantul of this plague, only to have their bones added to the beast’s many trophies.   As the age of the winds turned, a young elven boy named Ambalier, armed only with an elven short-blade, ventured forth in pursuit of the tormentor. In a venture that was nothing but folly, a one sided battle ensued.  Ravaged by the beast, Ambalier barely cleared his blade from its scabbard when the beast moved in to squash the youth beneath his considerable bulk.   The dragon’s body enveloped the boy and killed him instantly.   But in what must have been the work of the gods, as the dragon descended the elven short blade miraculously found its way between the impenetrable scales of the monster and snapped off at the hilt, deep within its chest.  The great dragon no longer menaced the elves from that day forward and died some years later from the festering wound.  As time passed the elves retrieved the severed blade, and in honor of the misguided youth, their master smith reforged it into Ambalier’s Wyrm.  Filled with elven magic, engraved with an image of the fearsome beast, and with its hilt clad in the dragon’s own scales, Ambalier’s Wyrm went on to become the bane of dragon’s throughout Illantul.

Actual Design and Construction:

The blade was forged by Windlass Steelcrafts using 1085, High Carbon Steel.  I etched the dragon at his lair into both sides of the blade.   The twisting guard is crafted of mild steel in the shape of a dragon’s tail.   The blade has a frame handle design with the frame constructed from a single piece of brass encircling the hidden tang. The frame has integral pins that fit into the brass spacer and has stabilized gar fish scales epoxied and pinned to each side.
