About This Commission:
The axe was provided by the customer who wanted the original head shape maintained. I removed the old handle scales and ground down the face of the axe to a surface smooth enough for etching. The hand drawn images were etched into each side (the wolf side and the eagle side) over fourteen layered etchings. Between etchings, resist was removed in some spots and/or added to others to produce a three-dimensional effect. Once the etching was completed, the entire head was cold blued and lightly sanded.
The handle scales were made from Central American Ziricote wood and are separated from the steel by a black liner. Hardened steel pins were inserted through the scales and the steel portion of the axe handle
